Do you do all/long nighters with a beer to make them more tolerable? If yes, as a follow up question, what is your choice beer when doing so?
PSSHH, Of course! I’m a big craft brew guy, in fact I brew my own, and am somewhat of a snob when it comes to beer. Now, I would like to say that I shun away those big corporate breweries (ie. Budweiser, Coors…etc.) but when it comes down to it…those are the cheapest lol. Money, as you know, is a big factor especially in archy school so I can’t be dishing out 15 bucks on a six pack every all nighter. If I had to pick, i’ll go with Budweiser
Moneo’s work as a architect, in my opinion, is second to his ability to frame his own ideas in the context of contemporary architecture. His book, Theoretical Anxiety and Design Strategies, offers a very comprehensive look at the development of architecture since the end of modernism. The book is essentially his lectures for his Contemporary Theory course at Harvard, so they are written very organically and its quite easy to read. Anyways, he breaks down the work of eight contemporary architects (sometimes incorrectly, however, in my opinion), but overall its a very interesting take where he frames an argument that actually building your ideas takes preference over the quality of your ideas. You can agree or disagree with that, but he projects that view onto the architects he breaks down. I don’t like his buildings, most of them anyways, but I respect the ability to separate oneself from the field enough to be able to define the era which you are working within. Many architects fail to realize the context of the field and think they are doing something ultra-revolutionary, when really they are just re-hashing old and outdated ideas. I am sure we can ALL think of a few firms that do this.
Thank you Scott for your 2 cents. And thank you “anonymous” for mentioning Moneo and opening up a FUCKING can of worms.
I think hideous was the right word for that building. It is pretty bad if you ask me. Seems to be completely random placement of things everywhere. I don't know. Not much to it really. Just my opinion though.
Yeah it kind of reminds me of the Mighty Morphin Powers Rangers headquarters.
what is your opinion on archistars? i read this book called 'against architecture' by franco la cecla and it triggers a lot of question for me as a student, what do we meant by architecture. franco sees archistars as medium by capitalist and design from bird eye view only. he called this architecture disease.
“Architestars” aka “Starchitects” come in many different shapes, sizes and forms. Like any other person from any walk of life, an architect can handle fame very modestly or be a giant egotistical douche. Depending on our bias towards a principal architect you may see them in two different perspectives. Either the idol of all of his/her disciples or the arrogant bastard who comes in once a week, critiques a dozen of his/her minions (employees) and passes off 100% of the finish product as their own. In most cases I personally see it as a little bit from both columns
As designers we all to a certain extent have this full of themselves, creative, god complex where we have to control societies cows (the general population) to see what we want them to see, to experience what we want them to experience or direct them through a convoluted maze that we belched out of our psyche.
So yes their intentions could be fueled by capitalism because what isn’t in this crazy messed up blue marble we call planet earth? Disease is pretty extreme though. I mean you follow or you try to embody all those that teach you. Even though no one can truly teach design, you are influenced by everything you interact with. But yeah I guess the lack of modesty and the douchey nature of a lot designers could be contagious… kind of like the hipster culture. FYI I’m not a big fan of hipsters.
What do you think of homosexuals? Do you like people being gay? Are you for or against same-sex marriages?
I grew up in a very gay friendly city. I see homosexuals like I see anyone else. I’m for same sex marriage because whats the worst that can happen? I mean you have Kim Kardashian marrying a second rate ball player for two months and society is questioning the sanctity of two loving men or women marrying? That ain’t right. What I don’t like is when gay people intentionally use the gay card like how some people use the race card.
I take bits and pieces from most major religions and use what I feel makes me a better person. But I do believe that there is a higher power but I don’t think mortal man is capable of interpreting it correctly.
Funny story. My third year of studio I was sitting in front of a comp so much that a painful growth occurred and I had to go in for surgery. I know that wasn’t the question but it’s some what related and a funny arch student story.
How tall are you and how much do you weigh? I've heard that most architect students are severely malnourished due to their "all-nighters" trying to finish assignments and eating only museli bars and instant noodles.
I am 6’ and I weighed about 190 my last year in school. My partner was the same weight but he’s like 4” taller than me.
for networking its also good to make a linkedin account
Well that helps if you actually have a job or experience/internship. I know a lot of students who treat their linkedin like facebook. So I have art history majors who are linked with finance majors. It’s like any other tool, so please use responsibly.
What are the top sites for an architecture job search?
Most of the ones that are advertised online are usually the ones that get 10,000 resumes a day (seriously). Just pick a city, look for atleast 300 firms there and contact them all. I would say apply to 15-25 a day. This isn’t just limited to architecture. All recent grads should be doing this. Think of a job hunt as a job 9-5.
Hi there, I love your guys tumblr and just wanted to ask the architecture world on tumblr where to start when putting together my final portfolio of the year. I generally never do well on portfolio work and was wondering if you have a few general guidelines which you generally stick to? Thanks for having a great blog
The sicker the graphic the bigger it should be. The more awesome a word sounds just make that your only text in the portfolio. Try not to go through the incremental growth of your project because it’s like watching paint mother fucking dry. Go for broke with different types of paper. The last one I like because i think diversity should be everywhere. THATS RIGHT WE GOTTA BLACK PRESIDENT NOW AND 4 MORE YEARS!!!! lol
Do you have any advice for networking? I'm now a senior and in this past year there has been a lot of emphasis on making connections now, rather than waiting until you get out of school. Any pointers on starting conversations, etc?
Go to a lot of AIA events and lectures outside of your school. Some people can be unbearable but that’s the real world!!! LOL
I'm pulling an all nighter atm. Found your site by googling all nighter haha. I'm interested in doing architecture but I'm not sure if it's right for me. I love drawing, I love creating especially, creating things that are physical. Things that I can interact with and let other people interact with. The job of seeing them experience the things I create is what drives me to do stuff. Like painting, sculping etc. Would architecture be good for me?
Give it a shot. What’s the worst that can happen? If life give you lemons just say “Fuck the lemons”
